1. Existing Site Consideration Our current site houses Mississauga's Clarke Hall and Firestation, located on Lakeshore Road West. These two buildings served Port Credit and is now considered a heritage site. With that in mind, it is our goal to keep these two existing structures untouched to pay heed towards Port Credit's heritage and Mississauga's culture as a whole. 2. Building for the Future Our Proposal focuses on accessibility, sustainability, and respect towards heritage. The new structure provides barrier-free paths for the North and South entrances of the facility, while maintaining an uninterrupted flow between the existing structures. 3. Our Main Challenges a. Existing Elements Existing interior structures were heavily changed in favour of more efficient lifestyle that offers visitors and staff more comfort, workflow, and aesthetics. A variable wall is proposed to allow for more itneractivity and add needed space for visitors during certain events. It was originally difficult for us to determine which interior existing elements should be kept. b. Accessibility Maintaining a barrier-free flow was definitely a priority on my list. Our proposal offers many accessible routes to choose from with access to all rooms within the facility. Integration of this concept was fairly simple; to install one main ramp throughout the facility to act as a main corridor for users. The only challenge was to design this ramp in ways that follow the Ontario Building Code, properly organizing room layouts, and maintaining accessible exits. c. Site Levels The most infuriating thing to work on were site levels. We wanted to maintain a uniform flow between the two existing structures, so we needed to carefully think how we can integrate a seamless design that transforms two different buildings and unifies them as one. |
