Description: My artist’s multiple consists of 24 modified brand-new Energizer batteries to resemble old-fashioned scrolls using printed paper, Liquitex’s “parchment” colour acrylic, and super-glue. Each battery card (or packaging) contains a chapter from the Bible’s book of Genesis, thus classifying my work as a varied edition.
I took the dimensions of a single battery and used it to create a template on MS Word. Interestingly, authentic dimensions for a papyrus sheet closely matches that of letter-sized paper; and I attempted to match it as a ratio (the battery measures at 1-7/8 inches in height). Scrolls are typically unrolled so that one page is exposed at a time, for writing or reading, with the remaining pages rolled and stowed to the left and right of the visible page. Text is written in lines from the top to the bottom of the page.
For much of antiquity, the scroll was the fundamental unit of literary transmission up until the 4th century when the Greeks and Romans moved on to using the codex. My multiple pays tribute to the ancient literary world; “re-Energizing” expired batteries by giving them a different purpose even after death.
